Equity for NY State Retirees
Dr. Margaret Renner's AFA supported quest to achieve equity for retirees from the N.Y. State Retirement System has paid dividends. The new guidelines are described in a letter Dr. Renner received from Robert DeLucca the director of member relations for the Retirement System. In the letter Mr. DeLucca states: "Community colleges will be instructed to report days worked as it relates to the number of credit hours taught. Our survey…indicates 15 credit hours is the normal workload for full-time instructors. Adjuncts will receive pro-rated credit based on this full-time criterion. For example, since 30 credit hours represents a full teaching load, an adjunct who teaches 18 credit hours will receive 18/30 or 60% a year, six months credit (nine months is equivalent to one year)" This is good news for adjuncts that are in the system but are not full-time employees. Before this the old formula resulted in an adjunct who taught 18 credit hours receiving only 3.5 months credit each year.
