On September 9th and 10th the leadership of the NCCL interviewed candidates for the New York State Senate and Assembly, the United States Congress, the United States Senate, and Judges of several courts.

Interviews were scheduled throughout the summer. Ken O?Neill, department representative of the Police Science Department, served as liaison for the AFA with the NCCL.

The interviews were an all-day affair. Candidates usually arrived well before their scheduled time and patiently awaited their turn.

AFA/NCCL President Charles Loiacono introduced the candidates, apprised them of the rules, and hosted the interviews.

Officers, executive board members, and trustees of the member unions attended and questioned the candidates.

The strength of the united unions was apparent by the turnout. Not one invited candidate failed to show up. The desire of every candidate to win coalition endorsement was not hidden as each candidate spoke of how important it was to his or her candidacy to garner the coalition?s support.

A congressman flew in from Washington to attend and a candidate for the United States Senate came down from Syracuse to meet with the coalition leadership.

?The strength of the coalition is awesome,? said President Charles Loiacono. ?When I was told that a call had been received from Washington D.C. that a congressman might be late, I had the congressman called back and told that he could skip the interview. The congressman said that there was no way he would miss an interview with the coalition. He arrived on time. Perhaps the most interesting part of the interviews was the insights we got from incumbents on what was happening inside chambers.?
