RETIREMENT BULLETIN
Dr. Margaret Renner's AFA supported quest to achieve equity for retirees from the N.Y. State Retirement System has paid dividends. The new guidelines are described in a letter Dr. Renner received from Robert DeLucca the director of member relations for the Retirement System. In the letter Mr. DeLucca states:
"Community colleges will be instructed to report days worked as it relates to the number of credit hours taught. Our survey…indicates 15 credit hours is the normal workload for full-time instructors. Adjuncts will receive pro-rated credit based on this full-time criterion. For example, since 30 credit hours represents a full teaching load, an adjunct who teaches 18 credit hours will receive 18/30 or 60% a year, six months credit (nine months is equivalent to one year)"
This is good news for adjuncts that are in the system but are not full-time employees. Before this the old formula resulted in an adjunct who taught 18 credit hours receiving only 3.5 months credit each year.
Dr. Renner deserves our thanks for a stellar achievement.
