Budget

On August 2, the Nassau County Legislature passed by unanimous vote a $162,958,849 budget for Nassau Community College.

This being the year both the AFA and the NCCFT enter negotiations for successor collective bargaining agreements, the administration and the unions needed the assurance that the budget would remain intact without cuts.

The AFA will begin negotiations in earnest next spring. The leadership plans to solicit input from the membership in the coming months.

With student registration up somewhere near 2%, it appears that we have turned the corner from the drop in registration the college experienced last year. We will, therefore, be negotiating in a positive atmosphere.

Union Elections

Mahadev Kumbar, chair of the AFA Elections Committee, has announced the dates for the coming elections for officers and department representatives. Since candidates for the AFA Executive Board must be department representatives, the election for the Executive Board has traditionally taken place after department representative are sworn in on January 1st.

The official election notice, including election procedures, is printed in this issue. We have also printed a copy of the nomination petition. Copies of the petition can be obtained from Kumbar by calling him at 516-433-3464 or e-mailing him at kumbarm@ncc.edu. If all else fails, you can write Marty at 2 Essex Road, Plainview, NY 11803.
