IN MEMORIAM Walton Multer, Jr. On Saturday, March 3, 2007, Walton Multer Jr. age 79, passed away. When the AFA was formed, it was Walt who organized the music department, and until he retired, due to health issues, was the department’s representative. He was a Julliard trained pianist, and taught piano and music theory at NCC. I remember a student who started part-time by taking Walt’s Rudiments of Music class in the evening. Walt would stay late and work with him on material he had trouble understanding. After getting to know the student better, Walt learned that his parents had disowned him. Walt subsequently wrote a letter to the parents conveying how hard their son was working, and how serious he was about becoming a musician. The letter helped bring about reconciliation and the family began seeing each other again. Shortly after, the parents helped him buy a good quality instrument to pursue his music studies. I met the family about seven years later when they flew up from Florida to attend the student’s Master’s Graduation Recital at Mannes College of Music. That was Walt—a caring, loving man who always went the extra mile. He was loved and respected by all the Music Department faculty and students. We will miss him very much. Steve Leonard
