Text Box:                                    SEXUAL HARASSMENT
In recent months there have been three instances in which members of the faculty have been accused of sexual harassment. One faculty member has been terminated, another will resign shortly, and in the third case a letter of warning will be placed it the faculty member’s permanent file.
In two of these cases the situation involved the faculty member driving students to their cars in the student parking lot.
This, while a totally innocent act, provides an opportunity for such charges to be made. Faculty members must err on the side of caution and protect themselves first. If a situation arises where a student needs assistance, call security.
It must be understood that once a charge of sexual harassment is made the college sexual harassment officer must, under federal law, open an investigation and follow it to a conclusion. If any faculty member has the misfortune to be involved in such a situation the union should be contacted before the faculty member speaks to anyone about the charges.
