The AFA Executive Board has voted unanimous-

ly to honor Kate Murray, Town of Hempstead Super-

visor, as the recipient of the coveted Woman of the Year Award.

Kate is the Supervisor of America’s largest township. With 762,000 residents, 2,000 employees, 24 departments, and a $383.5 million budget, she has managed to win two consecutive “excellence in financial reporting awards” from the non-partisan Government Finance Officers Association. Pro-

jects Kate is most proud of are the $40 million parks improvement program, Nassau’s fist mixed-income rental home development at the former Roosevelt Race-

way, and the cost-effective senior co-ops and rental apartments where a total

of 2,500 such senior homes have been completed to date.

Kate is unique in many ways. She is the first women to be elected supervisor in Hempstead Town’s 363- year history. She was the first woman and first attorney to be elected Hempstead Town Clerk, and in 1998, she became the first woman elected to the New York State Assembly from the 19th District.

Prior to serving as an elected official, Kate was an Assistant Attorney General, and prior to that, she served as advocate for Suffolk Uni- versity Battered Women’s Advocacy Project.

            Kate Murray will re-

ceive the Woman of the Year Award at the AFA Annual Spring Conference at the Chateau Briand on May 9, 2009, at 11:30 A.M. We anticipate a record turnout
