John Meehan

We learned on Wednesday November 4th, that John Meehan, the AFA’s first president, had succumbed to a third and final stroke.

John was living in Coral Gables, Florida, since his retirement in 1996. He and his wife Doris were enjoying life sailing on the boat John had always dreamed of when he contemplated his leisure years in the warmth of the southern sun.

The AFA owes much to John Meehan. AFA President Charles Loiacono gives the final farewell in his obituary on the inside pages of this issue.

The Election

As of this writing, the results of the election in two crucial races are unknown.

There is a dead heat in the county executive race between Tom Suozzi and Ed Mangano. There is a similar dead heat in the race for the legislative seat in the 14th district between Joe Belesi and Dave Mejias.

The pundits predicted wins for incumbents Suozzi and Mejias. But the AFA endorsed their opponents, both of whom put up strong showings. We won’t know the results until after this issue of the VANGUARD is put to bed.
